Bikeability

Bikeability is today’s cycle training programme. It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads.

The Project.

Bikeability is a free cycling programme offered by AFC Fylde Community Foundation and held at local primary schools to equip young children with the skills to begin their journey to safer cycling.

Bikeability is a national programme created to build up a child’s confidence in cycling on the road. By taking part in Bikeability, it has been proved that children’s mental health and wellbeing improves, their attention span and engagement increase and overall healthy habits improve. The Foundation offer Levels 1 & 2 in all partnership primary schools for the children taking part in the course.

Balance Bikes.

Balance bikes are lightweight bikes for younger children, made without pedals to improve confidence, balancing skills when cycling. The purpose of the bikes is to help children build on their spatial awareness and dynamic balance skills so they can eventually ride a bike with pedals without the need for stabilizers. Although stabilizers are widely effective in helping children learn to cycle, sometimes they can become too reliant on the extra support and struggle to move away to cycling without.  Balance Bike sessions usually take place on school playgrounds away from any unsafe obstacles, and busy traffic on nearby roads and include a range of fun activities for the school children to build confidence from.

Level 1 sessions are held on the school playgrounds free from the road and any potentially dangerous obstacles whereas Level 2 sessions involve a little more, by slowly leading children onto quieter roads so they can gain confidence being on real roads in real cycling situations.
