On Saturday, clubs from around the North West came together at the Fylde Sports and Education Centre to take part in a veterans tournament, with a team representing AFC Fylde Community Foundation crowned champions!
The tournament, held on the state-of-the-art astroturf pitches, saw teams from Burnley FC, Blackpool FC, Fleetwood Town FC and Wigan Athletic FC compete for the trophy alongside the Coasters.
After fantastic performances, Fylde defeated Blackpool in an all-Fylde Coast final to get their hands on the trophy, with the tournament enjoyed by all.
It was great to bring local veterans together, and our Armed Forces Project, overseen by Lee Geraghty, who spent over 20 years in the British Army, aims to help those who have served their country, and their families across Fylde - with support from the Veterans Foundation and BAE Systems.
Armed Forces Officer at AFC Fylde Community Foundation, Lee Geraghty, said: “It was great to bring the veterans community together for our veterans tournament.
“All the teams did themselves proud, and we appreciate Burnley, Blackpool, Fleetwood and Wigan participating and making it a memorable day for everyone involved.
“We look forward to meeting up again for other tournaments soon.”
Football sessions for current and former Armed Forces personnel are held every Monday night from 7pm, and it is the ideal place for a kickabout and to make new friends.
We would like to thank all the teams for taking part in our veterans tournament, as well as partners BAE Systems and the Veterans Foundation.
